Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who colonized Newfoundland , lived nearby at Greenaway and was a regular visitor with his half brother Sir Walter Raleigh. The famous crime writer Agatha Christie was also a regular visitor and was inspired to write her "Death on the links" here.
